Heartland was started in 1994 by Chris McDaniel in a spare bedroom of his duplex in Independence, Missouri. With two agents, a used copy machine and a folding table, Heartland Financial Group was born. Expansion occurred as we outgrew the spare bedroom and moved into “a whole garage.” In 1996, Heartland escaped the garage and built a 10,000 square foot building in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Heartland employed eight full time staff and over 50 career sales associates. Our dream had legs!
By December 1999, Heartland had over 200 agents in four states and exceeded annual premiums of $6,000,000. 1999 also found Heartland expanding its bottom line through mergers and acquisitions, Heartland made over $2,000,000 in acquisitions and acquired Successful Sales Systems, a Midwestern brokerage firm. With this acquisition Heartland grew overnight to over 6000 contracted sales associates. By 2003, Heartland surpassed $12,000,000 in sales. And by 2004, Heartland established itself as one of the largest distributions of Long Term Care insurance with over $7,000,000 in Long Term Insurance sales.
In June of 2005, Chris McDaniel purchased our current corporate headquarters, a 60,000 square foot building located off Interstate-70 in Blue Springs, Missouri ( a suburb 20 miles east of Kansas City and seven miles from our original “garage” in Independence).
With an eye always on growth, Heartland began looking (in 2006) to acquire a multi-state established insurance carrier. After an extensive search process, Heartland began negotiations with Dixie National Life Insurance Company. Founded in Mississippi, Dixie National Life was a 23 state Indiana domestic company.
On September 30, 2008, Heartland Financial Group formed Heartland Holding Company as a parent company to a “new baby, ” Heartland National Life Insurance Company.
Today, throughout the Heartland distribution network, annual sales surpass $20 million, making Heartland Financial Group one of America’s leading Senior Health/Life Insurance distributors.
A Letter From the CEO
I’m Chris McDaniel, President and CEO of Heartland Financial Group. I grew up in the small town of Gilman, Missouri. I learned at an early age the value of hard work by watching my dad balance his full time position as Superintendent of our local high school as well as attending to the family farm. My mom, while working along side my father maintaining the farm, had the responsibility of raising my brother, my sister and me.
I was introduced to the insurance business at the age of 18 right after high school. Although a college education was very important to my family, I saw the opportunity that insurance could offer not only to me but the people of the community as well.
After 25 years, I can honestly say that I have no regrets of my career choice. Hard work and dedication have allowed me the satisfaction of knowing that I have the opportunity to help people every day.
Since 1994 Heartland has grown to service most of the United States, although, we continue to keep a very strong focus on our home state of Missouri. I believe in “live in the community, work in the community”.
